Indiana and Miami Set National Championship Stage After Ohio State Wins

The two teams that handed Ohio State its only defeats this season—Indiana and Miami—are now set to clash in the national championship next Monday night.

This matchup highlights the strength of both Indiana and Miami, while also revealing a crucial area where the Buckeyes need improvement to compete for a national title.

Indiana and Miami’s Defensive Dominance

Indiana and Miami both defeated Ohio State this season by excelling at the line of scrimmage, a key battleground in football. Indiana, known for its flashy play, still demonstrated the ability to win the physical battles at the line. Miami, on the other hand, dominated Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals, overpowering them with aggressive defence.

Blueprint to Beat Ohio State

When Indiana triumphed over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship in December, they set a clear tactical blueprint. The Hoosiers applied pressure on Ohio State’s quarterback Julian Sayin through the middle and effectively sealed off the edges, preventing him from escaping the pocket. This exposed a weakness in Sayin’s game—his limited ability to evade pressure and make plays outside the pocket against top-tier defenders.

Miami applied a similar strategy in the Cotton Bowl, replicating Indiana’s game plan to stifle Ohio State’s offence. With a relentless defensive front led by Ahkeem Mesidor and Ruben Bain Jr., Miami consistently pressured Sayin. Their talented secondary capitalised on the quarterback’s forced errors, further disrupting Ohio State’s rhythm.

The Road Ahead for Ohio State

These two critical losses have underscored the importance of trench warfare—controlling the line of scrimmage—in postseason success. No matter how many star players a team has, their impact diminishes if the offensive line cannot protect the quarterback.

Ohio State’s disappointing end to the 2025 season has provided a clear lesson: to return to national championship contention, the Buckeyes must strengthen their offensive line and improve quarterback protection. The blueprint to beat them has been established. The question now is how Ohio State will respond in the 2026 season.
