New Delhi, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : Former West Indies captain Brian Lara has publicly voiced his support for Imran Khan, the former captain of Pakistan, amid growing concerns over Khan’s treatment while imprisoned. Lara joins a number of former international cricket captains who have raised alarms about the conditions surrounding Khan’s incarceration.
In a post on social media, Lara emphasized the need for Khan to receive adequate and independent medical care, asserting that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity. He expressed worry over Khan’s health and aligned himself with others who have questioned the handling of the cricket legend’s well-being.
Lara wrote on Instagram, “My encounters with Imran Khan on the field have been few, but my respect for him has always been profound and remains unchanged. He has symbolized hope, pride, and inspiration for his country. It is perplexing to see a man who brought glory to his nation through sport facing such a situation where he lacks the care and respect he deserves. Along with my fellow former captains, I demand that he receive proper, independent medical care and the respect every human being is entitled to. This is not about politics; it is about basic humanity for a legend of our sport.”
Lara’s remarks come shortly after other cricketing figures, including Greg Chappell, Pat Cummins, Javed Miandad, Moin Khan, and Kapil Dev, expressed their concerns regarding Khan’s health. Previously, 21 former international captains signed a petition demanding respectful treatment and appropriate medical care for the 1992 World Cup-winning captain.
The petition was endorsed by notable figures such as Sir Alastair Cook, Michael Atherton, Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, and Nasser Hussain, who voiced their deep concerns over reports of Khan’s deteriorating eyesight after more than three years in custody. The letter stated, “Imran Khan is 73 years old and has been in detention for over three years. Regardless of the legal and political arguments surrounding his case, we believe that the basic decency of fulfilling the court-mandated medical procedures is not a controversial demand.”
The signatories outlined three main requests: a comprehensive health assessment by a medical board established under the Supreme Court’s directive (including Khan’s personal doctor), the right for family visits without interruption every week, and the immediate implementation of any recommended medical treatment. They identified themselves as ‘former teammates and rivals,’ united by a bond forged on the cricket field that transcends national boundaries and disputes.
