Indian Players Shine at Badminton Asian Junior Championship in Japan

Yatsushiro, July 1: In an exciting start to the Badminton Asian Junior Championship, Indian player Dhyan Santosh defeated Thailand’s sixth-seeded Punnatait Prempungpong in the first round. Meanwhile, Dev Rooparelia and Tanvi Patra also secured victories in their respective matches.

Wednesday was a mixed day for Indian players in Yatsushiro, Japan. Dhyan Santosh showcased an impressive performance, winning the boys’ singles match against Prempungpong with scores of 21-17, 21-18.

On the girls’ side, Tanvi Patra triumphed over Indonesia’s Kristabel Purwanto, winning her first-round match 21-18, 21-6. Fifth-seeded Rooparelia faced a tough challenge against Sri Lanka’s Pamudu Randiligama, ultimately winning after three games with scores of 21-13, 16-21, 21-7.

Other notable performances included Adarshini Shri, who defeated Malaysia’s Lee Ke Shin 21-12, 21-12. However, Abhinav Garg fell to Malaysia’s Lucas Lee with scores of 21-13, 24-22.

Earlier, India’s journey in the mixed team competition ended in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 loss to Hong Kong. India started strong, with Rooparelia and Patra giving the team an early lead, putting them ahead 22-12 after two matches. The doubles pairs then won the first set comfortably at 55-44. However, the second game saw a shift in momentum as Hong Kong fought back. Can Yi Hei defeated Rooparelia 11-8, allowing IP Sum Yau to extend their lead to 22-16. The doubles pairs struggled to close the gap, leading to a decisive round.

Rooparelia managed to give India a lead again by defeating Chan 11-9, but IP quickly narrowed the gap to 22-21. In mixed doubles, the pair of Bjorn Jaison and Dianka Waldia gave India a slight advantage at 33-32, as their match against Cheung Sai Shing and Wing Chi Chu ended in a tie at 11-11.

However, Tanvi Reddy and Baruni Paraswal faced defeat against Chu and Yi Kiu Yu, losing 5-11. India could not recover from this setback, ultimately losing the set 55-43.
