Washington, August 27: In response to the devastating floods in Nepal, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed solidarity and pledged humanitarian assistance. The disaster has claimed the lives of 162 individuals, with hundreds more, including security personnel and tourists, still unaccounted for.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Rubio stated, “In the wake of this catastrophic flooding, we stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal and are praying for them. The U.S. State Department is prepared to provide humanitarian assistance to the Nepalese government as needed.”
U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gore, also extended his condolences to the people of Nepal. He emphasized that America stands with the families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.
Gore wrote on ‘X’, “My heartfelt sympathies are with the people of Nepal following the devastating floods. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. American citizens are advised to stay updated and ensure their registration in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.”
Earlier on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Nepal issued an advisory for American citizens in the affected areas. It urged individuals to remain vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions.
The advisory stated, “According to Nepalese officials, severe flooding has occurred in the Rasuwa district, with warnings issued for residents along the banks of the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani rivers. American citizens in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and Tanahu should stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas, seek higher ground, and adhere to local authorities’ directives.”
The advisory also recommended that American citizens stay clear of the flood-affected areas in Rasuwa. It noted that Nepalese authorities have imposed travel restrictions on the Prithvi Highway, Galchi-Nuwakot-Rasuwa-Syafrubesi road, and Mugling-Narayangarh route.
The embassy added, “Communication services remain disrupted in the flood-affected areas of Rasuwa. If you are safe, please contact your family, hotel, guide, or trekking/tour company as soon as possible. If phone calls are not going through, use text messages, emails, or messaging apps.”
The U.S. Embassy is actively working to locate American citizens who may be affected by the floods in Rasuwa.
