Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma Bids Farewell to Bangladesh PM Tariq Rahman

Dhaka, May 24: Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman on Sunday for a courtesy visit. This meeting marks the conclusion of Verma’s tenure, as he officially bids farewell. Dinesh Trivedi will succeed him as India’s new High Commissioner.

Verma’s meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office located in the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat. Notably, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was also present during this meeting.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party shared images of the courtesy visit on their official X handle, indicating that it was a farewell meeting prior to Verma’s departure.

Pranay Verma has been appointed as India’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union (EU). The Indian Embassy in Brussels also serves as the official mission for Luxembourg.

Verma’s diplomatic career has been quite distinguished. He has served in various capacities in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Beijing, Kathmandu, and Washington D.C. He has also held the position of Ambassador to Vietnam and worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs’ East Asia Division, significantly contributing to strengthening India’s relations with East and Southeast Asian countries.

Taking over Verma’s role in Bangladesh is former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi. Trivedi is a seasoned figure in Indian politics, having played vital roles in parliament, government, and diplomacy. While he faces challenges ahead, his extensive experience raises hopes for improved relations.

Trivedi graduated with a degree in Commerce from St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata and later pursued management studies in the United States. Before entering politics, he was involved in business and the aviation sector, and he is also a trained pilot. He began his political career with the Congress party, later joining Janata Dal, and subsequently moving through TMC to the BJP.

Trivedi has been a member of various parliamentary committees and received the ‘Outstanding Parliamentarian Award’ (2016-17) for his active participation in parliamentary affairs. He has served as the Chairman of the Indo-European Union Parliamentary Forum and has played significant roles in various parliamentary committees, including finance and commerce.
