Colombo, August 5: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Colombo for a one-day visit on Wednesday. During his visit, he met with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Aruni Ranatunga. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. Both sides also addressed regional and global issues of mutual interest.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka shared on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary Aruni Ranatunga during his Colombo visit. They discussed regional and global issues of shared interest, as well as ways to deepen close bilateral ties. The Foreign Secretary reiterated Sri Lanka’s crucial role in advancing India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and ‘Vision Ocean’ initiative.”
Earlier in the day, Misri met with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister, Wijitha Herath, to review ongoing cooperation in key priority areas. The meeting was attended by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and other officials.
The Indian mission posted on ‘X’, saying, “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath during his Colombo visit. The meeting reviewed ongoing cooperation in significant priority areas.”
During his visit to Sri Lanka, Misri is also scheduled to meet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and other senior leaders.
The Indian High Commission noted on ‘X’, “This visit, which advances regular high-level dialogue between India and Sri Lanka, will strengthen bilateral relations and give new momentum to ongoing important initiatives.”
On Tuesday, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha presented 500 liters of technical Malathion to Sri Lanka’s Health Minister, Nalinda Jayatissa. This assistance is part of India’s efforts to control the spread of dengue in Sri Lanka.
In 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sri Lanka. This marked the first visit by a foreign head of state or government leader following President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s assumption of office in 2024.
During that visit, seven memoranda of understanding were exchanged between the two countries, covering significant areas such as defense cooperation, health, telecommunications, energy, and connectivity.
