New Delhi, August 14: Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met with 20 athletes from the Indian Army who represented the nation in five different sports at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. These athletes contributed significantly, winning 8 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze medal, which accounts for 41% of India’s total medals and 62% of its gold medals.
During his meeting with the athletes, Rajnath Singh commended their performance, experiences, and dedication to sports. He praised the discipline, hard work, and pride that these soldiers and athletes bring to the nation. “It brings me great joy to see that among our champions, a significant number are daughters. Interestingly, most of our girls are excelling in boxing,” he noted.
He emphasized that this is a positive sign, showcasing that women’s empowerment is on par with any other field. The historic success in Glasgow should be a source of pride, but greater challenges lie ahead with the Asian Games and the Olympics approaching. “Expectations will be higher, pressure will increase, and challenges will become tougher. However, I am confident that the same discipline, courage, and relentless dedication that brought you to the heights of Glasgow will carry you to future successes,” he added.
Rajnath Singh remarked that the days when sports were limited to specific classes or affluent families are long gone. Today, sports have been democratized, and champions are emerging from every corner of the country, including remote villages and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of you come from middle-class families, yet you serve as inspiration for millions.
He pointed out that sports have evolved into a significant sector of society. While enjoyment and entertainment remain, sports have become a standard of success and are now regarded as a respected field. “You are the pioneers of this new era,” he stated.
He encouraged the athletes to continue working hard, challenge themselves, and learn from every competition. “You represent an Indian Army that is invincible both on the battlefield and in sports. Once again, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you champions.”
