Guiyang, June 20: India delivered an impressive performance at the World Boxing Cup (Stage 2) semi-finals held on Saturday. Four Indian boxers advanced to the finals, while two others secured bronze medals, bringing the country’s total medal count to six.
In the women’s 48 kg category, Jyoti started strong, defeating Mexico’s Fatima Herrera 3-2. Herrera had previously won a silver medal in the same weight class at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil earlier this year.
India’s challenge was further bolstered when Meenakshi showcased a dominant performance in the 51 kg category against Spain’s Laura Fuertes Fernández. Meenakshi won by unanimous decision, 5-0, securing her place in the title match.
In the 57 kg category, Prachi continued her stellar performance, defeating France’s Amina Zidani 4-1 to reach the finals. Prachi has been one of India’s standout athletes in Guiyang, having previously defeated the bronze medalist from the Paris Olympics in the quarter-finals.
Turning to the men’s competitions, Deepak secured India’s fourth spot in the finals with a remarkable 5-0 victory over France’s Makan Traore in the 70 kg category. He will have the opportunity to compete for the gold medal on Sunday.
