Marizanne Kapp Shines as South Africa Defeats India in Womens T20 World Cup

Manchester, June 22: In a thrilling encounter at the Women’s T20 World Cup, South Africa triumphed over India by six wickets. The standout performer for South Africa was Marizanne Kapp, who delivered an impressive innings of 81 runs off just 45 balls at Old Trafford. In addition to her batting prowess, Kapp also claimed two wickets, contributing significantly to her team’s victory.

During her innings, Kapp set multiple records. She recorded the third-highest score for South Africa in Women’s T20 World Cup history. The record for the highest score in T20 World Cup by a South African belongs to Lizelle Lee, who scored 101 runs in 2020, while Dane van Niekerk follows with an unbeaten 90 runs. Kapp also achieved the second-highest score while chasing in T20 World Cup history.

Kapp’s innings included seven fours and four sixes, making her the South African player with the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup innings. Furthermore, she jointly holds the record for the most sixes in a match while chasing in the T20 World Cup, a record previously set by West Indies’ Deandra Dottin, who hit four sixes in a single match in 2018.

Partnering with Tazmin Brits, Kapp forged a crucial 97-run partnership for the third wicket, marking the second-largest partnership for South Africa by players in the third and lower batting order. Kapp has now become the sixth player to achieve both 25 wickets and 500 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup.

Batting first, the Indian team managed to score 158 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs. Shafali Verma was the top scorer for India, making 31 runs off 15 balls, while Deepti Sharma contributed 29 runs. However, South Africa chased down the target of 159 runs with ease, losing only four wickets in 19.1 overs. Besides Kapp, Brits added 40 runs from 36 balls to the team’s total.
