
New Delhi, July 30: The seventh day of the Commonwealth Games 2026 was a remarkable success for India. On Wednesday, Murali Shreeshankar secured a silver medal in the men’s long jump, while para-athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched gold in the T47 100-meter event. Mohammad Basil also made headlines by winning the silver medal in the same category. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated all three athletes for their outstanding achievements.
In a post on her social media platform ‘X’, the President wrote, “Indian para-athletics has written a memorable chapter of excellence in sports. Heartfelt congratulations to Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning gold in the men’s 100-meter T47 event and to Mohammad Basil Morasinghankathi for securing silver. Your historic performance is a significant achievement for Indian para-athletics. May you continue to inspire the nation with your extraordinary determination and excellent performance.”
The President also praised Shreeshankar, stating, “Congratulations to Murali Shreeshankar for winning silver in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Winning consecutive Commonwealth silver medals is a remarkable achievement that makes the entire country proud. Wishing you continued success and a brilliant career ahead.”
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also took to ‘X’ to congratulate the three athletes. He wrote, “Historic double podium for India! Congratulations to Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning gold with a Games record (10.71 seconds) in the men’s para 100 meters T47, and to Mohammad Basil for winning silver (10.83 seconds). Dilip’s achievement as the first Indian male para-athlete to win gold in CWG athletics makes this moment even more special. Well done, champions!”
The Sports Minister praised Shreeshankar as well, saying, “A proud moment for Indian athletics. Congratulations to top core athlete Shreeshankar for winning silver with a fantastic jump of 8.09 meters in the men’s long jump event at the Commonwealth Games.”
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated Shreeshankar on his silver medal win. He wrote on ‘X’, “Congratulations to Murali Shreeshankar for winning silver in the men’s long jump final at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Shreeshankar also won silver in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He has once again brought glory to the nation, showcasing his remarkable consistency, strength, and determination. His inspiring comeback from a career-threatening knee injury makes this success even more commendable. His achievement is a proud moment for India and an inspiration for countless young athletes across the country. I wish him continued success and hope he achieves even more for the nation.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta congratulated Dilip and Basil, stating, “India has made a historic finish!
