Political Shift in Punjab: AAP Legislators Join BJP Ahead of Elections
The political landscape in Punjab shifts as AAP legislators join BJP, posing challenges for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ahead of elections.

New Delhi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The political scene in Punjab is witnessing significant changes as several legislators from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on November 2. This development comes at a critical time when Punjab grapples with various pressing issues. The BJP is leveraging these challenges to strengthen its political foothold in the state, although the Congress remains a key contender in the upcoming assembly elections.
In 2022, the Shiromani Akali Dal ended its long-standing alliance with the BJP, primarily due to controversial agricultural laws, which the central government later repealed. The electoral outcomes for both parties were disappointing that year.
While no official announcement has been made regarding a renewed alliance between the BJP and the Akali Dal, indications suggest that the two may reunite ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.
The AAP, which contested all 117 seats without any alliances in the last election, achieved a historic victory by securing 92 seats. In contrast, the Congress party was reduced to just 18 seats.
The BJP, which has traditionally had limited influence in Punjab, has been focusing on incorporating local leaders into its ranks. The party aims to position itself as a solution to issues such as law and order, drug addiction, rising debt, and economic stagnation.
Previously, seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs had also joined the BJP. The recent entry of these legislators could further bolster the BJP’s efforts to enhance its political presence in Punjab.
The defection of leaders like Harmit Singh Pathanmajra, Chetan Singh Jauramajra, and former IPS officer turned politician Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh is seen as a symbolic blow to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government, especially at a time when political messaging and perceptions are crucial.
Reports indicate that some leaders were dissatisfied with AAP’s candidate selection process, while others expressed concerns about party leadership and governance.
These defections are particularly significant as they occur while the AAP is attempting to defend its record following its substantial victory in 2022. Departing leaders have publicly raised issues such as drug addiction, gang activity, corruption, extortion, and administrative challenges in Punjab. Concerns over ticket distribution and political futures have also been cited as reasons for their departure.
On the ground, at least two of the resigning legislators were reportedly unhappy with their diminishing influence in their constituencies. There is a perception among some leaders that AAP’s organizational structure remains highly centralized, with national leadership wielding considerable influence over major decisions.
Although the departure of just three legislators does not threaten the government’s majority, it lends credence to opposition claims of growing discontent within the ruling party. Some AAP members have also expressed grievances about insufficient attention to local issues.
Drug addiction remains one of the most critical challenges facing Punjab today. Issues related to addiction, smuggling networks, and overdose deaths continue to dominate discussions. Opposition parties have consistently accused the government of failing to effectively curb drug-related problems despite repeated promises.
Conversely, the Punjab government cites its “War Against Drugs” campaign, claiming thousands of arrests and the seizure of assets linked to drug traffickers.
Unemployment and youth migration are also significant concerns in Punjab. Many young people are seeking opportunities abroad, often falling prey to dubious agents. Consequently, job creation is a key issue that voters may use to evaluate the Bhagwant Mann government.
Additionally, the rising debt burden on the state remains a serious concern. Economists and political analysts have repeatedly raised alarms about the state’s financial health. Increasing costs related to debt servicing are impacting development plans, making it a major political issue.
Long-standing challenges include the agricultural crisis, declining groundwater levels, sluggish industrial growth, law and order issues, and gang activities, particularly affecting rural areas where AAP received substantial support in 2022.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann argues that his government has made significant strides in various sectors. He highlights achievements such as expanding canal irrigation, investing in water infrastructure, providing free electricity to most households, large-scale government job recruitment, health insurance schemes, Aam Aadmi clinics, education reforms, road construction, and anti-drug campaigns.
However, opposition parties contend that public concerns over drug issues, crime, unemployment, and rising debt remain prevalent. Political debates suggest that many voters are assessing the government based not just on announcements but on real-world conditions.
Despite these challenges, AAP’s organizational presence is still considered strong, and it maintains a majority in the assembly. The recent defections have provided the BJP with influential local figures, potentially strengthening its future electoral campaigns. Ultimately, the extent of the BJP’s political gain will be determined by the voters.
