Indian Para Athlete Dilip Mahadu Wins Gold in 100m T47 at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, July 30: Indian para athletes showcased remarkable talent on the seventh day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Dilip Mahadu Gavit delivered an outstanding performance, clinching the gold medal in the 100m T47 event. Meanwhile, Mohammad Basil secured the silver medal.

Dilip dedicated his victory to his coach, stating, “Today is Guru Purnima, so this medal is a gift for my guru. I fell from a tree in my childhood, which led to the amputation of one of my hands. My coach saw me running and approached my family during a tough time. He took me under his wing and has been my everything since then. I train in Nashik, and it felt great to run today.”

He further expressed gratitude, saying, “I want to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting para athletes. The Paralympics, SAI (Sports Authority of India), and our government have been incredibly supportive, allowing us to bring honor to our country. In my childhood, I faced ridicule, but I ignored the negativity. My coach took me in, and I live with him. I will strive to perform well at the Asian Games too. Currently, I am not working, as my coach believes our priority should be winning a gold medal at the Olympics. Our entire focus is on achieving that goal.”

Dilip completed the 100m race in 10.71 seconds, setting a new games record and marking himself as the first Indian male para athlete to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Mohammad Basil finished the race in 10.83 seconds, earning the silver medal.
