Tamil Nadu Forms High-Level Committee to Enhance Jail Security
Following a jailbreak incident, Tamil Nadus Chief Minister has established a committee to strengthen prison security across the state.

Chennai, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the formation of a high-level committee aimed at bolstering security within Tamil Nadu‘s prisons. This committee will be chaired by former Director General of Police J.K. Tripathi, IPS (Retd.). Its primary mission is to review the current security measures in jails and propose enhancements.
This decision comes in the wake of a recent incident where 17 inmates escaped from the Theni district jail, raising serious concerns about the state’s prison security. In light of the gravity of the situation, the Chief Minister personally assessed the security status of the state’s jails. Based on the insights gathered during this review, he mandated the establishment of the committee.
According to an official release, the committee will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the security lapses that contributed to the recent jailbreaks in Tamil Nadu. It will also recommend strategies to fortify prison security, drawing from best practices and measures implemented both domestically and internationally to prevent future occurrences.
The committee will include members such as Additional Director General of Police and Director General of Prisons and Reform Services Thiru K. Shankar, IPS, and retired Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Thiru S. Rajendran.
In addition to investigating escape incidents, the committee will evaluate the existing security framework, standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical deficiencies, and staff deployment. The focus will be on identifying where security measures fell short, any shortcomings in technology and surveillance, and whether there was negligence in staff duties. Following this analysis, comprehensive recommendations based on global best practices will be put forward.
The government has indicated that the committee will soon submit its report and recommendations. The Chief Minister has instructed that prison security be strengthened on a war footing and that accountability be established for any negligence in duty.
