Glasgow, July 30: In the Commonwealth Games 2026, Manpreet Kaur narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s shot put final. Meanwhile, top distance runner Parul Chaudhary secured fifth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Canadian athlete Sarah Mitton took an early lead with a throw of 18.50 meters on her first attempt. Manpreet started with a throw of 15.92 meters and improved to 17.49 meters in the fifth round, placing her in third position. However, Jamaica’s Ladricia Cameron surpassed her with a final throw of 17.87 meters.
This throw brought Cameron level with Nigeria’s Jessica Ogi, who also reached 17.87 meters due to her best throw in the third round. Cameron missed out on the silver medal because of Ogi’s earlier performance. Manpreet had a chance to reclaim her position with her final throw but fouled, missing the opportunity for a medal. Sarah Mitton clinched the gold medal with a best throw of 19.88 meters, nearly two meters ahead of the competition.
In the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, Parul Chaudhary clocked a time of 9:26.75, finishing fifth. Kenya’s Faith Cherotich won the gold medal with a games record time of 9:01.76. England’s Alice Thorner achieved her personal best, overtaking Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai to secure the silver medal with a time of 9:05.45.
Parul initially kept pace with the lead group but fell behind during the middle stages. She attempted a strong finish in the last lap, but the gap was too significant to close. In other events, Murali Sreeshankar delivered an impressive performance in the men’s long jump, winning the silver medal. Para athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit claimed the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter T47 race with a games record, while Mohammad Basil secured the silver medal.
