New Delhi, May 29: Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated the two-day ‘National Agriculture Conference – Kharif Campaign 2026′ at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Pusa on Thursday. On the first day, agricultural experts, scientists, and officials from across the country engaged in in-depth discussions on various farming issues. The second day will focus on preparing a detailed roadmap for Kharif crop preparations and strategies with state agriculture ministers.
Emphasizing the spirit of “One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team,” Chouhan stated that everyone must work with full commitment. He praised farmers, saying, “Despite adverse conditions and the challenges of climate change, our farmers have achieved record food production, enhancing the pride of our nation. I salute the food producers of the country from the bottom of my heart.”
Chouhan released this year’s third advance estimate, revealing that total food grain production is expected to reach 376.563 million tons, an increase of 1.88 million tons compared to the previous year.
He congratulated farmers, scientists from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, and state officials for this achievement. The minister clarified that food security is the country’s top priority. “Our nation, with a population of 1.4 billion, cannot rely on the world for food. Ensuring food security is our farmers’ responsibility, which is why we call them ‘Annadata,’ meaning life-givers.”
Chouhan stressed the role of states, stating, “The central government cannot implement plans alone. They must be executed through the states. You are the representatives of the states, so take this responsibility on your shoulders. This government job is not just about earning a salary; its purpose is to change people’s lives and ensure the country’s food security.”
Regarding El Niño, he mentioned that there is no need for panic at this stage. “No final estimate has come yet. These are just speculations. We will act according to the situation as it unfolds.”
Delivering a stern message, the minister stated that officials who do not participate in this crucial conference aimed at increasing production are unfit for their positions and should be removed immediately. The conference reiterated the commitment to advancing agriculture, doubling farmers’ incomes, and making India developed and self-reliant.
