Guwahati, June 21: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized a large consignment of poppy seeds valued at approximately 1.31 crore rupees in Assam’s Cachar district. Two individuals were arrested during the operation, officials reported on Sunday.
The operation was initiated based on specific intelligence regarding smuggling activities in the district.
Acting on the information, a joint team from the Assam Rifles and DRI intercepted a vehicle on Silchar Bypass Road late Saturday evening. They discovered 8,764 kilograms of poppy seeds being transported in a truck.
Officials estimated the illegal market value of the seized consignment to be around 1.31 crore rupees. The two arrested individuals are residents of Silchar.
Additionally, authorities confiscated the Tata truck used for transporting the goods and two mobile phones. The seized opium seeds, along with the arrested individuals and other confiscated items, have been handed over to the DRI for further investigation and legal action.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of security and enforcement agencies to curb the movement of restricted and illegal substances in the northeastern region.
The Assam Rifles stated that they are actively collaborating with the DRI and other law enforcement agencies to disrupt active smuggling networks across the area.
Recent months have seen several significant seizures based on regular intelligence-led operations, delivering a substantial blow to smuggling syndicates.
Police noted that this latest seizure represents another crucial success in the ongoing campaign against smuggling and reflects the commitment of security agencies to maintain law and order in the region.
Investigators are now looking into the source and destination of the seized consignment, as well as potential links to major smuggling networks operating in the northeast.
