India vs West Indies: Key Match for T20 World Cup Semifinal Spot

New Delhi, February 28: The Indian cricket team is set to face the West Indies in a crucial “do or die” match during the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup 2026. The winner of this match will secure a direct ticket to the semifinals. However, if rain disrupts the game at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, it could complicate matters for Team India.

According to ICC regulations, there is no reserve day for any match in the Super-8 round. Therefore, if rain becomes a factor, the net run rate will play a significant role in determining which team advances.

Currently, the West Indies boast a net run rate of +1.791, while India sits at -0.100. This means that in the event of rain, the Caribbean team would advance to the semifinals due to their superior net run rate.

Fortunately for Indian fans, the weather forecast for Kolkata on Sunday suggests minimal chances of rain. Daytime temperatures are expected to hover around 34 degrees Celsius, dropping to between 25 and 26 degrees during the match.

India faced a setback in their first Super-8 match, losing to South Africa by 76 runs. However, they bounced back impressively against Zimbabwe, winning by 72 runs. Batting first, India scored 256 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs, marking their highest score in the T20 World Cup. Abhishek Sharma contributed 55 runs, while Hardik Pandya scored an unbeaten 50 off just 23 balls. Tilak Varma also made a quick 44 runs off 16 balls. In response, Zimbabwe managed only 184 runs for the loss of six wickets, with Brian Bennett scoring 97 runs off 59 balls.

In bowling, Arshdeep Singh was exceptional, taking three wickets for just 24 runs in four overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel each claimed one wicket. On the other hand, the West Indies suffered a nine-wicket defeat against South Africa in their last match.
