India to Continue Support for International Solar Alliance Despite US Exit

New Delhi: India has affirmed its commitment to the International Solar Alliance (ISA) even after the United States decided to withdraw from the organisation. This was confirmed by a senior government official on Thursday.

The United States is among 66 international organisations from which it has chosen to disengage. The official stated that the government is aware through media reports that the ISA is included in this list.

Currently, the International Solar Alliance has about 125 member countries. The official emphasised that ISA remains focused on its core objective: assisting member nations in collectively addressing key challenges related to expanding solar energy according to their specific needs, thereby ensuring universal access to energy.

Further, the official highlighted that ISA will continue working with its member countries, particularly the least developed countries and small island developing states, to promote the development and deployment of solar energy. This includes efforts to mobilise finance, build capacity, and reduce risk perceptions.

According to a statement from the White House, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday suspending US support for 66 organisations, agencies, and commissions. This move follows a review of the US participation and funding in international bodies, including those affiliated with the United Nations.

The Trump administration has distanced itself from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other climate-focused agencies and organisations. Experts consider America’s retreat from climate change initiatives a significant setback, given that it is the world’s largest emitter and the largest economy.
