New Delhi, June 21: India showcased an impressive performance at the 56th Usti Nad Labem Grand Prix, a prestigious European boxing tournament held in the Czech Republic. The nation secured a total of 12 medals, comprising 8 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze.
The women’s team had a stellar start, with 4 out of 5 boxers clinching gold medals and 1 winning silver. Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), current Asian champion Preeti Pawar (54 kg), Sakshi (51 kg), and Priya (60 kg) all achieved unanimous victories in their finals to earn gold medals, while Parveen (65 kg) secured a silver medal.
On the men’s side, the team matched the women’s success by also winning 4 gold medals. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (55 kg), Sachin (60 kg), Ankush (80 kg), and Narendra (90+ kg) emerged as champions in their respective weight categories.
Lovlina Borgohain defeated Italy’s Melissa Gemini 5-0 in the final of the 75 kg category, while Preeti triumphed over France’s Jessa Marcel by the same score in the 54 kg title bout. Sakshi recorded an impressive 5-0 victory against France’s Mesoun Bourega in the 51 kg final. Priya also won gold in the 60 kg category, defeating the Czech Republic’s Barbora Maxova 5-0.
In the men’s competition, Jadumani overcame England’s Abdul Burton 4-1 in the 55 kg final. Sachin and Ankush achieved significant victories over Hungary’s Veres Rohland and the Czech Republic’s Florian Daniel, respectively, both winning 5-0. Narendra secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Armenia’s David Chaloian in the heavyweight final.
Aditya Pratap Yadav and Kapil Pokharia had to settle for silver medals after narrow defeats in the finals of the 65 kg and 90 kg categories, respectively. Sumit Kundu earned a bronze medal for India in the 70 kg category.
