Glasgow, August 2: India showcased its boxing prowess at the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing one gold and one silver medal during the final bouts on Saturday night. Ankush Panghal triumphed in the men’s 80 kg category, while Narendra settled for silver in the men’s 90+ kg division.
India concluded its boxing campaign with a total of 10 medals: 7 gold and 3 silver. This achievement places India fourth in the overall medal tally of the Commonwealth Games 2026, with a cumulative total of 13 gold, 17 silver, and 8 bronze medals.
In the men’s 80 kg final, Ankush Panghal faced England’s Dimeji Shittu in bout number 186 at SEC Hall 5. The English boxer dominated the first round, with all five judges favoring him. However, Ankush made a remarkable comeback in the subsequent rounds, earning 10 points from three judges. The final round proved decisive, as Ankush secured 10 points from four judges, clinching the title.
In the men’s 90+ kg category, Narendra faced a tough opponent in England’s Damar Thomas, losing by a unanimous decision of 5-0. Thomas took the first round with a 4-1 score and continued to impress, earning 10 points from all five referees in the next round. Narendra managed to secure 10 points from only one judge in the final round, resulting in Thomas winning the championship.
Earlier on Saturday, Preeti Pawar opened India’s account in boxing by winning gold in the women’s 54 kg competition against Canada’s Scarlett Savanna Delgado. Jasmin Lamboria followed suit in the women’s 57 kg category, defeating Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh 5-0 to claim gold. However, Jadumani Singh had to settle for silver after losing to Australia’s Jai Dixon.
In the evening, Sakshi secured gold in the 51 kg category by defeating England’s Ruby White 5-0. Priya Ghanghas added another gold for India by overcoming Canada’s Mary-Bathool Al-Ahmadiyeh 4-1. Boxer Arundhati Chaudhary won gold in the women’s 70 kg division, while Lovlina Borgohain earned silver in the women’s 75 kg category. Sachin Sivach also brought home gold by defeating his English opponent 3-2.
