Guilin, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Global Canal Conference 2026 commenced on October 13 in Guilin, located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China. This significant event has attracted representatives from over 20 countries, including canal cities, research institutions, universities, and industry organizations.
Key topics discussed at the conference include the preservation of global canal heritage, modernization of water transport, and coordinated development of river basins. The theme for this year’s conference is “Innovation and Resilience: Key Choices,” with a focus on two main issues.
The first issue revolves around the preservation, restoration, and renewed utilization of the Linchqiu Canal, regarded as a priceless example of ancient water conservation architecture. The second issue addresses the potential for high-quality development in modern water transport through the newly opened Finglu Canal.
During the opening ceremony, the World Green Design Organization honored the Finglu Canal project with the International Green Design Award and the International Green Design Contribution Award.
Notably, the Finglu Canal was officially inaugurated on September 16 of this year. This canal is a crucial project within the new western land-sea corridor. Construction began on August 28, 2022, and the canal spans a total length of 134.2 kilometers, designed to meet Class 1 inland waterway standards. It can accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 5,000 tons, representing one of the highest standards set for China’s inland waterways.
