Steve Smith Undergoing Concussion Assessment After Helmet Injury in Durban Test
Steve Smith is being assessed for a concussion after a helmet injury during the Test match against South Africa in Durban.

Durban, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : Former Australian captain Steve Smith is currently under concussion observation following a helmet injury sustained during the Test match against South Africa in Durban. The incident occurred when Smith was struck by a bouncer from South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje while batting in the second innings.
Smith attempted to duck under the delivery, expecting the ball to rise less than it did, but it struck his helmet directly. At that point, he had faced only four balls. Initial concussion checks were performed, and he was cleared to continue his innings. However, when Australia took to the field, Smith did not return.
On the fourth day, Australian all-rounder Beau Webster was unable to provide further details about Smith’s fitness. He expressed hope that Smith would be fit to play on Tuesday. “I’m optimistic he will be okay,” Webster said. “He took a nasty knock to the head. We’re wishing him well, and hopefully, he will return for the next Test in Gqeberha.”
According to Cricket Australia’s concussion and head trauma policy, any player diagnosed with a concussion must remain sidelined for at least 24 hours and cannot return to cricket-related activities until cleared by a medical officer.
Smith has a history of concussion and vertigo symptoms. He previously missed an Ashes Test in 2019 after being hit by a bouncer from Jofra Archer, which led to Marnus Labuschagne replacing him in the Test squad.
The second Test in Gqeberha is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 18, while the third Test in Cape Town is still two weeks away. Therefore, Smith’s return for both upcoming Tests remains a possibility.
