New Delhi, June 17: India has achieved a remarkable milestone by recording the second-largest victory margin against Afghanistan in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Indian team triumphed by 170 runs in the second ODI match held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
The record for the largest victory over Afghanistan is held by Australia, who defeated them by 275 runs in a match played in Perth in 2015. Sri Lanka follows in third place, having beaten Afghanistan by 155 runs in 2024. Zimbabwe also secured a win against Afghanistan by 154 runs in 2018, while Scotland claimed victory by 150 runs in 2015. England has previously defeated Afghanistan by 150 runs in 2019.
Batting first, the Indian team was bowled out for 402 runs in 49.5 overs. They lost their first wicket at a score of 9, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (4) departing early. Following this, Rohit Sharma partnered with captain Shubman Gill to build a solid second-wicket partnership of 87 runs.
Rohit scored 48 runs off 39 balls, hitting 8 boundaries before getting out. Gill then teamed up with Ishan Kishan for a remarkable third-wicket partnership, amassing 224 runs off 140 balls. Ishan made a stellar 125 runs from 79 balls, including 7 sixes and 14 fours, while Gill contributed a brilliant 154 runs off 110 balls, featuring 2 sixes and 22 fours. Nangeliya Kharoti from the visiting team took the most wickets, claiming 4, while Rashid Khan secured 3 wickets.
In response, the Afghan team was all out for 232 runs in 44.3 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 41 runs, and Rahmat Shah contributed 79 runs. Additionally, Sediqullah Atal added 42 runs to the team’s total. For India, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Barar each took 3 wickets, while Prince Yadav claimed 2 wickets and Washington Sundar took 1.
