Ahmedabad, August 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a review meeting in Ahmedabad, emphasizing the government’s commitment to establishing India as a global sports destination through hosting major international sporting events. This meeting focused on India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, along with preparations for the 2029 World Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
After the meeting, Shah posted on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “The Modi government is fully committed to making India a global hub for sports by hosting international sporting events.”
He added, “Today, I chaired a review meeting regarding India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics, as well as preparations for the 2029 Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games.”
The meeting included Central Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi, and other officials.
This review comes at a time when Ahmedabad is gearing up to host several major international sports events; the city has already been declared the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Commonwealth Sport formally approved Ahmedabad (referred to as ‘Amdavad’ by the organization) as the host for the Centenary Commonwealth Games during its general assembly in Glasgow in November 2025.
The 2030 edition will mark the 100th anniversary of the first Commonwealth Games held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The 2030 Games will take place in Ahmedabad following the 2029 World Police and Fire Games.
Last June, India was chosen as the host country for this event, with Ahmedabad designated as the venue.
At that time, Shah described this selection as recognition of the country’s growing sports infrastructure and Ahmedabad’s rising reputation as a sports hub.
The government has linked preparations for these events to India’s long-term Olympic goals.
Ahmedabad has been proposed as India’s candidate city for the 2036 Olympics, with preparations focused on developing sports infrastructure and facilities that meet international standards.
Shah previously stated that the city could host several international sporting events by 2036, and the facilities developed for these events could later assist athletes and serve as training infrastructure.
Conversations between Commonwealth Sport and Indian officials regarding preparations for the Commonwealth Games have already taken place.
A delegation from Commonwealth Sport visited Ahmedabad and New Delhi in April. They inspected various venues, including the Narendra Modi Stadium, Mahatma Mandir, and Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, and discussed the organization of the 2030 Games with officials from Gujarat and the central government. This latest review follows the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where India secured fourth place jointly with Scotland, winning a total of 29 medals, including 13 gold.
Glasgow has now entrusted Ahmedabad with the responsibility of hosting the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. The government is developing sports facilities in Ahmedabad with these major events in mind.
