India-EU FTA Sparks Optimism Among Vapi Traders

Vapi, Gujarat—The recently signed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union has generated a wave of enthusiasm among industrialists in Vapi, a prominent industrial town in Gujarat. This development is especially significant for local industries that have faced challenges due to US tariffs in recent times.

Business leaders believe the agreement will open new international markets and strengthen exports, helping to offset losses incurred in the US market. Vapi and its surrounding areas host over 10,000 small and large-scale industries, making it a hub for sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering, and paper.

Many of these companies already maintain trade relations with various countries, earning valuable foreign exchange. However, US tariffs had posed serious difficulties for them. In search of alternatives, businesses were exploring new markets, and now the India-EU FTA is expected to provide a significant boost by facilitating easier trade with European nations.

Dr. Kamal Vasi, Director of Mangalam Drugs, noted that the FTA has effectively opened the European pharmaceutical market to Indian companies. The pharma sector in Vapi had been grappling with challenges due to US tariffs, but the agreement has sent a positive signal to the market. Indian pharmaceutical exports to Europe are likely to increase rapidly since tariffs will no longer be a barrier, benefiting India’s position as the world’s largest producer of generic medicines.

Leading industrialist Sharad Thakkar described the agreement as historic and one of the most beneficial trade deals under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He emphasized the urgent need for new markets to compensate for losses caused by US tariffs. The deal is expected to facilitate smoother trade with European countries and bring stability to Indian industries.

Satish Patel, President of the Vapi Industries Association, highlighted that Vapi and nearby regions are home to over 10,000 operational industries. He referred to this FTA as the “mother of all deals,” which will prove highly advantageous for sectors such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides by providing direct trade opportunities with European countries.

Patel further stated that the agreement will compensate for the setbacks caused by US tariffs and serve as a milestone for Vapi’s industries. It will play a crucial role in advancing the vision of a ‘Developed India’ by expanding markets for both imports and exports, thereby accelerating industrial growth in the region.
