New Delhi, March 21: India has successfully achieved a significant milestone by producing 1 billion tons of coal for the second consecutive year. The Ministry of Coal announced this achievement on Saturday.
According to the ministry, this accomplishment, reached on March 20, marks a significant step towards enhancing self-reliance in the energy sector and ensuring a consistent fuel supply for essential industries.
The coordinated efforts and continuous hard work of all stakeholders in the coal sector have made this goal attainable. This achievement has aided in meeting the country’s growing energy demands and maintaining record stock levels in coal-based thermal power plants.
The ministry stated that this success reflects improved planning, effective implementation, and strong coordination within the coal supply chain, which is also contributing significantly to the country’s economic growth.
Meanwhile, recent data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry indicates that the combined index of the country’s eight major infrastructure sectors rose by 2.3 percent in February.
Coal production also saw a 2.3 percent increase in February, while electricity generation grew by 0.5 percent.
The Ministry of Coal emphasized its commitment to establishing a stable, transparent, and performance-based system. This includes policy measures, regular monitoring, and a focus on coordination with all relevant parties.
Despite the ongoing crisis in West Asia, India’s thermal power plants currently hold approximately 53.41 million tons of coal stock, sufficient for about 23 days based on current consumption. Additionally, extra storage is being arranged at coal mines to meet future needs.
Coal India Limited is also taking necessary steps to ensure an adequate supply of coal to small, medium, and all other consumers.
