Mumbai, June 10: Bollywood’s beloved “Dhak Dhak Girl,” Madhuri Dixit, is still fondly remembered as ‘Mohini’ from the iconic film ‘Tezaab.’ This film not only elevated her career but also established her as one of the leading actresses in Hindi cinema. However, few know how Madhuri was chosen for this unforgettable role. Recently, director N. Chandra unveiled the secret behind his decision to cast her as the lead.
During an episode of the dance reality show ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5,’ N. Chandra reminisced about that pivotal time. He shared, “The first time I saw Madhuri Dixit, I knew she had something special. I had edited several films by then, and I got the chance to visit a film set where I met Madhuri for the first time.”
He continued, “At that time, I was editing a film called ‘Bajrangi.’ When I arrived on set, someone introduced me to Madhuri. She was just starting her career, but I sensed her uniqueness right away. Perhaps that moment planted the idea in my mind that if I ever had the opportunity, I would work with her.”
N. Chandra elaborated, “When I began working on the story of ‘Tezaab’ and thought about the character of ‘Mohini,’ only one name came to mind: Madhuri Dixit. She was my first and last choice for the role. I never considered any other actress because I was confident she could portray the character best.”
He also noted, “Sometimes, luck plays a significant role. At that time, the film’s hero was Anil Kapoor, and his secretary, Rakesh Nath, was also Madhuri’s secretary. This made it easier to coordinate schedules and other essential details. When luck is on your side, even challenging tasks become manageable.”
Released on November 11, 1988, ‘Tezaab’ became one of the biggest films of its time. The chemistry between Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor was a hit with audiences. The film also featured notable performances from Anupam Kher, Chunky Pandey, Kiran Kumar, and Suresh Oberoi. It achieved remarkable success at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film of 1988.
