
Mumbai, June 14: The Mumbai Crime Branch has confiscated 4,734 bottles of codeine syrup valued at ₹5.2 million. During this operation, four suspects were arrested.
The Crime Branch unit seized the cough syrup containing codeine phosphate during a raid in Navi Mumbai, where an additional 4,581 bottles were found at one suspect’s residence. In total, the seized items amounted to ₹5,307,400, which includes a motorcycle worth ₹100,000.
Based on a tip-off, the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Unit 11 apprehended the suspects near the Indian Oil petrol pump on SV Road in Kandivali West, close to the State Devi Gajanan Gupta Trust. The suspects were allegedly attempting to sell 153 bottles of codeine phosphate syrup for recreational use.
Among the arrested individuals, two are 26 years old, one is 23, and the fourth is a minor aged 17. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act at the Malad police station, and further investigations by the Crime Branch are ongoing.
Earlier, on June 4, police in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, arrested four drug traffickers in two separate incidents, seizing a significant quantity of codeine syrup bottles.
In the first operation, the Sopore police team spotted three suspicious individuals during a patrol in the Badambagh area. Upon noticing the police, the trio attempted to flee towards nearby orchards but were apprehended.
During the search, a total of 150 bottles of codeine syrup were recovered from the suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as Irfan Ahmed Peer, Ejaz Ahmed Mattu, and Umar Zahoor Nazar, all residents of Badambagh.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act at the Sopore police station, and an investigation has commenced to determine the source of the seized narcotics and the supply network involved.
