How Can Democracy Win in the Defeat of Daughters: Rekha Guptas Bold Statement

New Delhi, April 29: A special session was convened in the Delhi Assembly to discuss women’s reservation. During this session, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a fierce attack on the opposition. She expressed disappointment over the discussions that took place in the Lok Sabha on April 16 and 17.

In her address, CM Rekha Gupta stated that every woman was looking towards the Lok Sabha, hoping that their 78-year wait might finally come to an end. For years, women in the country have been waiting for representation in assemblies and the Lok Sabha, so they can participate in policy-making. Unfortunately, the discussions held on April 16 and 17 were extremely disheartening.

She raised a critical question: Why is there a need for women’s reservation? This is a significant issue that repeatedly confronts our society. The circumstances for women and men in our country are vastly different. When a woman carries the expectations of society, she often cannot progress at the same pace as a man. If she steps outside her home, she faces countless questions. It is only when the Constitution provides opportunities, the party grants chances, and the public bestows blessings that an individual can become a representative.

Gupta shared her own experience, stating that the party provided her an opportunity, and the public’s support allowed her, a daughter from a simple family in Delhi, to step into public service. She questioned the obstacles that prevent women from reaching the assembly and Lok Sabha. Despite the country gaining independence and the Constitution being established, the political parties in free India seem to hinder women’s advancement.

She accused the opposition of pre-determining to block the bill, creating various hurdles in the process. “I want to ask, how can democracy win in the defeat of daughters?” she questioned.

Targeting Arvind Kejriwal, she remarked that after going to jail, he attempted to make his wife the de facto Chief Minister. When society opposed this, he had to bring in Atishi. However, the world witnessed that he was not allowed to sit on his chair. Swati Maliwal expressed her pain in a post, which went unheard, leading to her departure from the assembly. The mistreatment of the only female MP was witnessed by everyone.
