Patna, August 30: Water levels in major rivers of Bihar, including the Ganges, Kosi, Gandak, Budhi Gandak, Ghaghara, and Bagmati, continue to fluctuate. Many rivers are flowing above the danger mark. Recent reports indicate an increase in water discharge from the Kosi and Gandak rivers’ barrages as of Sunday afternoon.
This situation has heightened flood pressure in riverside areas. According to the Central Water Commission, the downstream discharge of the Kosi River at the Veerpur barrage was recorded at 157,080 cubic feet per second (cusecs) by 2 PM on Sunday, showing an upward trend. Earlier, at 10 AM on Sunday, the discharge was 148,660 cusecs, while it was 164,730 cusecs on Saturday night.
Similarly, the Gandak River’s downstream discharge at the Valmikinagar barrage reached 150,200 cusecs by 2 PM on Sunday, up from 131,500 cusecs at 10 AM and 99,800 cusecs on Saturday night.
In Patna district, the Ganges at Gandhi Ghat was 36 centimeters above the danger mark as of 6 AM on Sunday. However, a decrease of 14 centimeters is expected by 8 AM on Monday. At Hathidah in Patna, the Ganges was 51 centimeters above the danger mark, with a predicted drop of 15 centimeters in the next 24 hours. At Diaghaghat, the Ganges was 40 centimeters below the danger mark, while the Sone River in Maner was recorded 36 centimeters below.
In Sripalpur, Patna, the Ganges was 80 centimeters below the danger mark, but an increase of 90 centimeters is anticipated by Monday morning. In Bhagalpur district, the Ganges is flowing 75 centimeters above the danger mark, while it is 22 centimeters below in Bhagalpur and 60 centimeters below in Munger.
In northern Bihar, several rivers are also under pressure. At Dumariyaghat in Gopalganj, the Gandak River is 33 centimeters above the danger mark. In Khagaria, the Budhi Gandak is 51 centimeters above, and in Baltara, the Kosi is 65 centimeters above the danger mark. The Kosi at Kursela in Katihar is recorded at 59 centimeters above the danger mark.
In Supaul, the Kosi River is 86 centimeters below the danger mark, with an expected decrease of 11 centimeters by Sunday night. In Siwan, the Ghaghara River is 32 centimeters below, but a rise of 10 centimeters is anticipated by Monday morning. In Muzaffarpur, the Bagmati River remained 48 centimeters below the danger mark, with a predicted decrease of 10 centimeters by Sunday evening. Heavy rainfall has also been reported in various parts of the state over the past 24 hours.
The Indo-Nepal border area recorded 134 millimeters of rainfall, while Nirmali saw 82 millimeters, Kursela 57 millimeters, and Khagaria 50.4 millimeters. The India Meteorological Department forecasts light rain in the Kosi, Bagmati-Adhvara, and Sone catchment areas until August 31, with light to moderate rain expected in other catchment areas across the state.
