
Mumbai, April 10: The Puducherry Assembly elections concluded peacefully on April 9, 2026, with an impressive voter turnout. A record number of voters participated in the election in the Union Territory.
Voting commenced at 7 AM and concluded at 6 PM across 30 constituencies, with citizens showing great enthusiasm.
According to data released by the Election Commission of India at 8:15 PM, Puducherry recorded a historic voter turnout of 89.83%. This figure surpasses the previous record of 86% set in 2006 and is higher than the 82.2% turnout in the 2021 Assembly elections.
Officials noted that the final turnout may increase as all data is fully compiled. Puducherry has approximately 950,000 voters, and participation was robust across all regions, including Puducherry (23 seats), Karaikal (5 seats), Mahe (1 seat), and Yanam (1 seat).
Voters from all demographics actively participated in this election, with 88.09% of male voters, 91.33% of female voters, and 91.81% of transgender voters exercising their right to vote. This reflects an inclusive and participatory democratic process.
This significant turnout is seen as a sign of heightened political awareness and enthusiasm among the electorate in this competitive election.
The All India N.R. Congress (AINRC)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is striving to retain power, while the opposition India alliance, which includes Congress, DMK, and VCK, is attempting to make a comeback.
The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has added intrigue to the contest, as it may influence voting trends in several constituencies.
Actor-director Senthamizh Selvan’s party, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), is also in the fray, seeking to strengthen its political foothold in the region.
