Patna, April 15: A new era has begun in Bihar following Nitish Kumar’s resignation on Tuesday. For the first time, a Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken the oath of office, marking a significant milestone for the party. The official announcement came after senior BJP leader and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan dispelled any doubts regarding the decision. Samrat Chaudhary has now assumed the role of Bihar’s 24th Chief Minister, with Governor Syed Ataul Hossain administering the oath of office.
Samrat Chaudhary, born on November 16, 1968, in Lakhanpur village of Munger district, hails from a prominent political family. His father, Shakuni Chaudhary, has served as an MLA and MP seven times, while his mother, Parvati Devi, has also been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. As a leader from the Other Backward Classes (Kurmi community), Samrat Chaudhary is recognized for his strong influence over the OBC vote bank in the state’s politics.
Chaudhary’s political journey has been filled with ups and downs. He began his career in 1990 with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and became the Agriculture Minister in Rabri Devi’s government at a young age in 1999. He was one of the youngest ministers in Bihar. He was elected as an MLA from Parbatta in both 2000 and 2010. After a brief stint with Janata Dal (United), he joined the BJP in 2017.
In 2023, he was appointed as the state president of Bihar BJP. In January 2024, he became the Deputy Chief Minister in the Nitish government, overseeing crucial departments such as Finance, Health, Urban Development, and Panchayati Raj. He secured victory from Tarapur in the 2025 assembly elections. His rapid rise within the BJP over the past eight to nine years is attributed to the party’s outreach strategy towards the OBC community.
However, Samrat Chaudhary has also faced controversies. In his 2025 election affidavit, he disclosed that two criminal cases are pending against him—one registered in Patna and another in his home district of Munger. He has also been accused of violating the model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections. His affidavit revealed assets worth over 10 crore, both movable and immovable.
