Tragic Incident in Chamba: Two Killed as Boulder Crushes House

In Chamba district’s Chadi panchayat, a massive boulder dislodged by continuous rainfall fell onto a house in Sutanh village, killing a woman and her husband. The victims were the daughter and son-in-law of a local resident named Sanju. The incident occurred late Sunday night.

Schools Closed in Thunag, Theog, Ani, and Shillai

Authorities in Mandi’s Thunag subdivision, Shimla’s Theog, Kullu’s Ani, and Sirmaur’s Shillai have ordered the closure of all government and private schools, including Anganwadi centres today due to worsening weather conditions. SDMs from all four subdivisions issued the orders early Monday morning to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Flood Alert: Rivers and Streams Swelling Rapidly

Due to intense overnight rainfall, river levels are rising rapidly. In Chamba, the Bajwar Nala near Churah Gadfari panchayat overflowed, leading to the closure of nearby roads. Similarly, the Ani Khad in Kullu is in spate, posing risks to low-lying areas and commuters.

  • Orange Alert for July 22:
    Issued for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, Mandi, and Sirmaur. These regions may experience isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

  • Yellow Alert:
    In effect for Chamba, Kullu, and Shimla, indicating chances of localized heavy showers.

  • Forecast for July 23:
    Orange alert for Una and Bilaspur, and yellow alert for Hamirpur, Mandi, and Solan.

  • July 24 Outlook:
    The Western Disturbance is expected to weaken, leading to improved weather across most regions.

  • Total damage to public and private infrastructure: ₹1,235 crore

  • Total fatalities: 125

    • 25 deaths due to landslides, cloudbursts, and flash floods

    • 35 people reported missing due to floods and house collapses

The administration has urged residents, especially those in hilly and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant. Tourists are advised to avoid travel to remote or high-altitude regions until the weather stabilizes.
