New Delhi: “Destiny favours those with passion and perseverance.” These words perfectly describe Hima Das, who overcame early challenges to become one of India’s finest athletes. Once struggling to run due to lack of proper shoes, Hima’s journey is an inspiring tale of dedication and triumph.
Born on 9 January 2000 in Nagaon, Assam, Hima Das began her athletic career during school days. Originally a football enthusiast like many from North-East India, she played for her school’s football club and participated in inter-school competitions. Coming from a farmer’s family, she faced financial constraints, yet her love for sports remained strong. Each football match brought a small earning of 400-500 rupees, which motivated her to pursue a sports career.
Hima studied at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Dhing, where her coach Nippon Das encouraged her to focus on running. Heeding this advice, she shifted her attention to athletics. Despite limited resources, she began training in old shoes that were not designed for running. Her father supported her efforts wholeheartedly. She soon made her mark at inter-school and district-level competitions with impressive performances.
At just 13 years old, Hima won her first gold medal in the 100 metres sprint. She went on to become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships. At the 2018 Asian Games, she secured two gold and one silver medal, setting a national record in the 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 seconds. This achievement made her a household name across the country.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to athletics, Hima Das was honoured with the Arjuna Award on 25 September 2018. She currently serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police.
However, in September 2023, Hima faced a temporary suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after missing three tests within 12 months. The suspension has now been lifted, and she is eligible to compete in upcoming events.
Hima Das’s journey from a football-playing girl in a small town to becoming India’s sprinting sensation highlights the power of resilience and hard work.
