New Delhi, August 31: Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football on Monday. Messi scored 125 goals in 207 matches for Argentina. In his retirement announcement, he expressed that he will deeply miss the support from fans on the field.
In an emotional message on Instagram, Messi stated, “After much reflection since the final, I want to inform everyone that I am retiring from the national team. This decision saddens me, and I still feel that sadness inside, but I believe the time has come. I swear I have always given my all—not just during those years when we won everything, but even before that; I have always fought for this jersey and poured my heart out on the field to bring you joy and pride for Argentina through football.”
“Time flies, chapters end, and this is a chapter that makes me very sad. I have loved being part of the national team, always have, and always will. I have given everything; there is nothing left to give, and besides that, some excellent young players are coming up who deserve to be here. Thank you for the love over the last 20 years. During his illustrious international career, Messi led Argentina to three FIFA World Cup finals. Argentina finished as runners-up in 2014 and the recently concluded World Cup. Under his captaincy, Argentina claimed the World Cup title in 2022.
Although Messi’s international career has come to an end, he will continue his club career with Inter Miami, where he is contracted until 2028. His departure from the Argentina national team marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter that began in 2005, culminating in the long-sought World Cup victory that defined his international career.
