Chennai, June 7: Conditions are rapidly becoming favorable for the southwest monsoon‘s advance in Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted widespread rainfall activities in several districts, particularly in the Western Ghats, over the coming days.
The weather department has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h in various parts of the state.
The most intense rainfall is expected in the Nilgiri, Theni, and Dindigul districts, as well as the hilly areas of Coimbatore district, where very heavy rain may occur in some locations. Meteorologists indicate that the strengthening monsoon will likely bring significant rainfall to the Western Ghats, providing relief from the recent heat and dry conditions. However, there is also an increased risk of local flooding, landslides, and disruptions in sensitive hilly areas.
In addition to the districts under heavy rainfall warnings, the RMC has predicted thunderstorms and heavy rain in parts of Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruppur, Madurai, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari. Similar conditions are expected in the hilly areas of Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts.
Officials have advised residents in both hilly and low-lying areas to remain alert, especially in districts where heavy rainfall is anticipated.
Strong winds and lightning associated with the storm could disrupt normal activities across many parts of the state.
Cloud cover bringing rain is likely to persist over most of western and southern Tamil Nadu. The weather department has indicated that conditions may remain poor in the northern coastal region. High daytime temperatures and humidity are expected to create muggy conditions in several coastal districts.
Chennai experienced severe heat on Saturday, recording the highest maximum temperature in the state at 40.4 degrees Celsius. Despite the arrival of the monsoon, this combination of heat and humidity is likely to keep the weather uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, rainfall has intensified in some areas of southern Tamil Nadu. Nalumukku in Tirunelveli district recorded the highest rainfall in the state over the past 24 hours, with 17 centimeters, while 9 centimeters were recorded in Maylar, Kanyakumari district, indicating the strengthening influence of the southwest monsoon in the region.
