Bhopal, August 1 (HS): The spell of heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh has now come to a halt. According to the forecast, the system will remain weak for the next three days, although light rain is still expected in several districts. Showers are likely in 12 districts, with winds blowing at speeds of 30–40 km/h. A strong rain system is expected to become active again between August 4 and 6. So far this monsoon season, the state has received an average of 28 inches of rainfall, which is 59% more than normal. Ten districts, including Gwalior, have already met their seasonal rainfall quota.

Unusual July Rains Push Rivers and Dams to the Brink
Weather scientist Dr. Divya E. Surendran stated that two depressions remained active in July, along with cyclonic circulation and the monsoon trough. Due to these conditions, districts in the eastern region—Jabalpur, Sagar, Rewa-Shahdol—as well as Bhopal, Narmadapuram, and the Gwalior-Chambal belt recorded above-average rainfall. In contrast, the Indore-Ujjain region received less rain, with Indore and Burhanpur registering the lowest figures. No heavy rainfall is expected anywhere in the state over the next week. During the second week of August, however, intense rain may occur in the Gwalior-Chambal and Rewa divisions. Against the average July rainfall of 12.5 inches, the state has already recorded 21 inches.
Dams Overflow as Monsoon Intensifies
This year’s Sawan season saw relentless rain, causing rivers and streams across the state to swell. Several districts faced floods, and many dams overflowed due to the heavy downpour. Water inflow increased significantly in major reservoirs like Bargi, Johila, Indira Sagar, and Omkareshwar, leading to the opening of gates. In total, water levels have risen in 54 major dams. Bhopal’s lifeline, the Upper Lake (Bada Talab), is now just 2.5 feet below full capacity. If the state receives more rain in August, all reservoirs could reach their full levels.
