Outrage at Punjab University Following PhD Scholars Electrocution Death

Chandigarh, July 29: Protests have erupted at Punjab University following the tragic death of 28-year-old PhD scholar Jyoti due to electrocution. Various student organizations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), have accused the university administration of serious negligence. They are demanding a thorough investigation, strict action against those responsible, and compensation of one crore rupees for the victim’s family.

In response to the incident, student leaders staged a demonstration outside the Vice Chancellor’s office, calling for accountability from the administration.

Himangi Sharma, a student leader present at the protest, stated that this unfortunate incident has shaken the entire university community. Jyoti was not only a PhD scholar but also a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) recipient, balancing her academic responsibilities with those of her family.

Sharma alleged that electrical work was ongoing in the South Campus when the electrocution occurred. She emphasized that proper safety measures should have been in place during such activities, especially in adverse weather conditions, but this was evidently overlooked.

According to Sharma, Jyoti was an integral part of the university family, and all students regarded her as a sister. The students are demanding justice and want to know who is responsible for this incident and how such negligence could occur. They are urging the administration to conduct a transparent investigation to identify the culprits and take strict action against the responsible officials.

The ABVP has labeled the incident as a severe administrative failure and is insisting on a compensation of one crore rupees for the victim’s family. The organization has also stated that if any university official or employee is found negligent during the investigation, strict action should be taken, including resignations from those responsible.

Student organizations have warned that their protests will continue until their demands are met with concrete decisions.
