Guwahati, May 15: Heavy rainfall in Assam has led to flood-like conditions in urban areas of Silchar and Srimanta. Officials reported that significant rainfall on Friday affected several regions of Assam, particularly the urban areas of Silchar in the Cachar district and parts of Srimanta district.
The relentless downpour has submerged many low-lying areas in Cachar, Srimanta, and Hailakandi districts. This has disrupted normal life and vehicular movement, with streets in Silchar completely inundated. Traffic jams have become severe in various locations.
Authorities indicated that the overflowing drains have caused flooding in different parts of Srimanta as well. Tragically, one person reportedly died after coming into contact with electric wires during the rain in the flooded area. Police are investigating the incident.
Forecasts predict more rainfall in the region over the next few hours. Local officials and disaster management teams remain on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that cloudy conditions will persist in many parts of Assam, with light to moderate rainfall expected to continue.
The regional meteorological center in Guwahati reported that clouds bringing rain to the northeastern region remain active. According to rainfall data released by the IMD, significant precipitation has also been recorded in and around Guwahati.
The highest rainfall recorded since Thursday morning was 50.5 mm in Rupnagar, Guwahati, while downtown University area saw 21.5 mm and Guwahati University recorded 19.5 mm. In Kamrup district, Hajo received 15.5 mm, and Sualkuchi recorded 18 mm of rainfall.
The IMD’s ‘nowcast’ bulletin issued on Friday indicated a “high likelihood” of one or two rounds of moderate rainfall in various parts of Assam.
Officials stated that the state administration is closely monitoring the situation in the districts of the Barak Valley, especially in sensitive urban areas prone to sudden flooding and waterlogging.
