New Delhi, August 27: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has expressed strong disapproval regarding the opposition to Mohan Bhagwat’s proposed event in New York. VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal and leader Alok Kumar criticized the protesters, asserting that preventing an individual from expressing their views contradicts the fundamental principles of freedom of expression in a democratic society.
Both leaders acknowledged that disagreements are natural but emphasized that attempting to silence a voice through protests is inappropriate.
Vinod Bansal specifically targeted the Mayor of New York, questioning his stance against Bhagwat’s event. He noted that while personal opinions can be viewed differently when one is not in a constitutional position, the responsibilities of a mayor increase significantly after taking office. Bansal highlighted the historical discrimination between Black and White communities in America and questioned why attacks on Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist places of worship do not receive adequate discussion.
He stated that the RSS is one of the world’s largest organizations, and when its leader visits a city, local authorities and residents should welcome the guest. Indian culture has a long-standing tradition of honoring guests. While it is acceptable to agree or disagree with someone’s views, it is essential to first listen and understand them. He suggested that hearing Mohan Bhagwat’s thoughts could broaden one’s understanding. Bansal reiterated that while everyone has the democratic right to dissent, silencing someone under the guise of protest is not justified.
VHP leader Alok Kumar also responded to the opposition against Bhagwat’s event in New York. He expressed surprise at the Mayor’s statement regarding the protests. Both India and America have long fought for freedom of expression and speech. The constitutions and laws of both nations grant citizens the right to voice their opinions. Therefore, this freedom should not be limited to a single group or ideology.
Kumar accused some individuals of wanting to view freedom of expression selectively. He claimed that these individuals wish to express their views freely while opposing others from different religions or ideologies. Stifling the opinions of someone from another faith simply because they differ from one’s own beliefs is not in line with democratic principles. He criticized the New York Mayor’s opposition as contrary to the established democratic values of both Indian and American societies.
He described this mentality as one where individuals believe that only their religious texts and beliefs are correct, denying others the right to speak. In a democracy, ideas should compete with ideas. Granting individuals the freedom to express themselves is a hallmark of a democratic society.
