Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu on 9 and 10 January. The warning comes as a low-pressure area develops over the Bay of Bengal, particularly affecting the delta and northern coastal regions of the state.
The IMD reported that an atmospheric circulation over the central part of the southern Bay of Bengal has transformed into a low-pressure area. This system is expected to strengthen into a deep low-pressure area within the next 24 hours, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu and nearby areas.
According to the forecast, the delta districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy rainfall on 9 January. Districts expected to be most affected include Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram. Intense rainfall in these areas may cause waterlogging and disruptions in transport and agriculture.
On 10 January, the heavy rainfall zone is expected to expand to include Villupuram, Cuddalore, along with Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Thanjavur districts. As the weather system moves further over the Bay of Bengal and intensifies, continuous rainfall is anticipated in coastal and inland districts.
The IMD also indicated the possibility of light rain in some coastal districts on Wednesday, serving as a precursor to the heavier rainfall days. Additionally, light fog is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which may affect road and rail travel.
Meanwhile, a frost warning has been issued for parts of the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal areas, where night and early morning temperatures are expected to drop significantly.
The IMD has urged district administrations, farmers, fishermen, and residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official guidance as weather conditions are expected to change over the coming days.
