Gujarats Umreth Assembly By-Election Scheduled for April 23, Counting on May 4

New Delhi, March 15: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Sunday the by-election for the Umreth Assembly seat in Gujarat. This election follows the passing of the sitting MLA, Govind Parmar.

The schedule for the by-election was revealed by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during a press conference. According to the commission, voting for the Umreth seat will take place on April 23, with the counting of votes set for May 4. The entire election process is expected to conclude by May 6.

The Umreth seat became vacant after the demise of Govind Parmar, a two-time MLA from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representing Anand district. Parmar passed away on March 6 due to illness and was hospitalized prior to his death.

Following his passing, the assembly seat was declared vacant. Parmar had been elected as the BJP candidate in both the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections. Early in his political career, he served as an independent MLA and held the position of Minister of Agriculture in the government led by former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

In response to the announcement, Anil Patel, the chief spokesperson for the state BJP, stated that the party will work to retain this seat. He expressed sorrow over the loss of the popular leader Govind Parmar, who dedicated himself to addressing the public’s issues.

Patel mentioned that in the upcoming by-election, the state and district organizations will operate under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and state BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma. He confidently asserted that they will win this seat again.

Additionally, the Election Commission has announced by-elections for seven other assembly seats across the country.
