Ahmedabad, March 28: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has apprehended a primary suspect linked to a fake currency racket involving counterfeit ₹500 notes.
The 46-year-old suspect, Bhavesh Gajera, a resident of Kamrej in Surat, was taken into custody for his role in the production and distribution of the fake notes. He has been remanded to six days of police custody.
This arrest follows a significant operation conducted on March 18, during which the city’s Crime Branch intercepted a vehicle in the Amraiwadi area, detaining seven individuals, including a woman.
Authorities seized counterfeit ₹500 notes valued at over ₹2.48 crore from the vehicle. The suspects were allegedly en route to deliver and circulate these fake notes. They are currently under a 10-day remand for further questioning.
An official revealed that another accomplice involved in the production of the counterfeit notes has also been arrested. Bhavesh Gajera was present during the conspiracy to print the fake currency and played an active role in the crime.
Investigators disclosed that, in early February 2026, Gajera, along with Mukesh Thummar and Ramesh Balar, had already circulated approximately ₹20 lakh in counterfeit notes.
According to the Crime Branch, Gajera provided financial assistance for purchasing equipment and materials used in printing the fake notes and was involved in their circulation. Three mobile phones worth ₹15,000 were confiscated from him.
Authorities had previously identified a printing unit equipped with printers, cutting machines, and specialized currency sheets. The police stated that the network was organized and methodical, with members sourcing high-quality paper featuring counterfeit security features from suppliers in China, conducting printing operations at home.
Initially, the group tested the counterfeit notes in small transactions before expanding distribution through informal local markets.
Investigators are continuing their efforts to identify additional individuals connected to the racket, trace the supply chain of materials, and uncover the full extent of the operation.
