Ujjain, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : The Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain held its Bhasma Aarti on the auspicious Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The event attracted a significant number of devotees eager to witness this extraordinary ritual.
In the early hours of Thursday, following the command of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened to the sound of drums and other instruments. As the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti took place, the temple resonated with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and the recitation of mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the ritual began with the ceremonial bathing of Lord Mahakal using Panchamrit, a mixture of water, milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices. The initial bell was rung as offerings were made, followed by a camphor Aarti. Adorned with a crown, Baba Mahakal was then worshipped with the Bhasma Aarti, accompanied by the sounds of traditional musical instruments.
The priests of the Mahakal Temple conducted the grand Aarti, which was witnessed by a large crowd of devotees. Many had queued since the previous night to catch a glimpse of their beloved deity. During the Bhasma Aarti, men traditionally wear dhoti and women wear sarees.
According to tradition, the Bhasma Aarti is offered to Baba Mahakal by the Mahanirvani Akhara. It is believed that after the offering of Bhasma, Baba Mahakal manifests from the formless to a tangible form. This event draws numerous devotees to the holy city of Ujjain, eager to participate in the sacred ritual.
