Government Focuses on Increasing Oilseed and Pulses Production at Rabi Conference

New Delhi, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : The recent agricultural conference held in New Delhi focused on preparations for the Rabi season, with self-reliance in agriculture as a key agenda. Discussions covered oilseeds, pulses, and fertilizers, emphasizing sustainable practices, digital agriculture, and climate-resilient farming.

Mangi Lal Jat, Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, stated that the conference aimed to develop action plans in collaboration with states to ensure timely access to seeds, crops, and fertilizers tailored to local conditions for farmers.

Jat shared insights with reporters, noting that officials and ministers from various states participated in the two-day event. The discussions considered the geographic and agricultural contexts of each state to determine suitable crops and varieties for farmers. The emphasis was also placed on ensuring that no farmer is left out of government schemes and agricultural support.

A significant concern for farmers is the availability of fertilizers. The conference underscored the necessity of ensuring adequate supplies while promoting balanced usage. Recommendations for fertilizer use at the district level have been revised, encouraging farmers to follow these guidelines, which aim to reduce costs, maintain soil health, and optimize resource use.

Jat highlighted that recent crises in West Asia have increased the burden of fertilizer subsidies on the government. This situation heightens the need for prudent fertilizer use, which can lead to reduced government expenditure, improved soil health, and less financial strain on farmers.

The conference also placed special emphasis on enhancing the production of oilseeds and pulses. States were urged to develop action plans that align with local conditions and to implement them promptly.

A representative from Punjab pointed out that the state has historically contributed significantly to national agricultural production. He urged the central government to release necessary funds in a timely manner, particularly for the availability of fertilizers like DAP, to meet farmers’ needs.
