New Delhi, December 1: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised Virat Kohli‘s disciplined and calculated approach after his impressive 135-run innings against South Africa in the first ODI on Sunday. India won the match to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with Kohli earning the Player of the Match award.

Kohli scored 135 runs off 120 balls, hitting 11 fours and 7 sixes. His knock helped India post 349 runs for 8 wickets, while South Africa was bowled out for 332 in 49.2 overs in reply.

Speaking about Kohli’s technique and temperament, Gavaskar said India’s charismatic player succeeds because he understands his game better than anyone else.

Speaking to Jio Star, Gavaskar said, “He (Kohli) is the type of batsman who cannot hit straight away. Some batsmen can do that, but Kohli knows his game very well. He knows that is not his strength. His strength lies in hitting shots over covers, straight drives and flick shots. Yes, he sometimes plays bottom-hand flicks over square-leg or mid-wicket for sixes, which is the safest way of batting.”

Gavaskar highlighted Kohli’s excellent running between the wickets. He said, “Running between wickets is very important. Singles are the lifeline of batting in any format. You keep taking singles and your innings keeps flowing. Even if batsmen at the other end want to score quickly, Kohli bats according to the team’s needs.”

After losing the Test series 0-2, Team India will be looking to win the ODI series against South Africa. The next ODI between both countries will be played on December 3 in Raipur.
