Pune, February 4 – A serious accident occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway late Tuesday evening when a propylene gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel. As a result, all lanes heading towards Mumbai remained completely closed for more than 12 hours.
The incident took place around 6:15 pm when the tanker lost control at a bend and flipped over. Upon receiving reports of a gas leak, authorities immediately shut down the lanes from Pune to Mumbai. Since propylene gas is highly flammable, the situation in the area became dangerous.
Emergency teams, including NDRF, fire services, IRB Police, and chemical specialists, responded promptly. They worked continuously to stop the gas leak and to upright the tanker. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the accident.
The closure caused a traffic jam stretching 25 km, trapping thousands of vehicles including buses and trucks. Passengers faced significant inconvenience, and the lack of facilities worsened the situation.
Officials clarified that traffic will not resume until experts declare the area safe. Initial estimates suggest that normal traffic flow may not return until Wednesday morning.
Authorities have appealed to travelers to avoid using this route and to take alternative roads like the old Mumbai-Pune highway. They also advised following live updates from Maharashtra Highway Police, as the risk remains due to the ongoing gas leak.
Officials emphasized that the road closure is necessary to ensure public safety. They assured that emergency teams are actively managing the situation and control will be restored soon. Early alerts helped prevent a major disaster.
