Paris, April 13: French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France and the United Kingdom will co-host a crucial meeting this weekend to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Macron stated on the social media platform X that the movement of vessels through this vital maritime route must be resumed as soon as possible. He also emphasized the need to restore peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in Lebanon.
He asserted that a resolution to the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East can only be achieved through diplomatic efforts. Macron clarified that addressing all core issues related to the region, including Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, its activities in the area, and safe passage through the Hormuz Strait, is essential for a lasting and robust solution.
The French president further mentioned that his country is ready to play its full role in this direction. He revealed that France and the UK will jointly organize a conference with countries willing to contribute to a peaceful multinational mission. This mission will be entirely defensive and separate from the conflicting parties.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical oil transport routes, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Approximately one-fifth of global oil supply passes through this route.
Meanwhile, UK leader Keir Starmer remarked that the closure of the Hormuz Strait would be extremely detrimental to the global economy. He stressed that restoring international shipping would help alleviate inflation and the pressures of living costs.
Starmer noted that the UK has united over 40 countries advocating for the restoration of freedom of navigation in the region. He mentioned that France and the UK will hold a joint summit this week to discuss a coordinated multinational plan for international maritime security.
This development comes in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s announcement of a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump alleged that Iran has refused to abandon its nuclear program despite lengthy negotiations mediated by Pakistan.
Trump claimed that Iran’s alleged laying of mines in the strait has disrupted global shipping and severely impacted international trade. He warned that the United States would not ensure safe passage for any vessel that pays “illegal tolls” to Iran.
The American president also stated that the U.S. Navy would destroy any mines laid in the maritime route and would respond firmly to any attacks.
