New Delhi, April 14: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has opened doors for players from small towns to realize their big dreams and make a mark in the cricketing world overnight. The 21st match of IPL 2026 took place on Monday between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Hyderabad. A new star emerged in this match, showcasing exceptional bowling skills that led SRH to a significant victory against a formidable team like RR. His name is Sakib Hussain.
This match marked Sakib Hussain’s debut in the IPL. After experienced bowlers like Harshal Patel and Jaydev Unadkat failed to perform, the SRH management placed their trust in the 21-year-old. The right-arm fast bowler lived up to their expectations.
Sakib took 4 wickets for just 24 runs in 4 overs, claiming the scalps of explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, along with Jofra Archer, Tushar Deshpande, and Ravi Bishnoi. His economical, lethal, and successful bowling not only secured victory for his team but also caught the attention of cricket analysts and fans alike.
Born on December 14, 2004, in Gopalganj district, Bihar, Sakib hails from a financially challenged farming family. His childhood dream was to join the Indian Army and uplift his family. However, recognizing his height, hard work, and cricketing talent, his family and local coaches encouraged him to pursue cricket.
Sakib’s journey began with tennis ball cricket. He was well-known as a fierce bowler in his area, often traveling for matches with a fee of 500-700 rupees. He soon made it to the district cricket team and later the Bihar state team. He debuted in T20 cricket against Andhra Pradesh in 2022 and in first-class cricket against Karnataka in 2024. At the time of his Ranji debut, he lacked good shoes and the money to buy them. His mother sold her jewelry to buy him a pair.
Bowling at speeds of around 145 km/h, Sakib’s talent caught the eye of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who purchased him for 2 million rupees for IPL 2024. However, he did not get a chance to play that season and was subsequently released.
In the IPL 2026 auction, SRH expressed confidence in Hussain, acquiring him for 3 million rupees. After consistently impressive performances in the nets, he was given the opportunity to debut against a strong team like RR. He proved his worth by leading his team to victory in his very first match.
Sakib credits his success to SRH’s fast bowling coach, Varun Aaron. After the match, he stated, “Varun Bhai has been working with me for the past four years. Any improvement you see in my bowling is thanks to him. I owe my success entirely to him.”
While Sakib’s IPL career has started on a high note, he knows that the journey is far from over. Aspiring to be part of the Indian team, this bowler must maintain consistent performances not only in the IPL but also in domestic cricket.
