
Kolkata, June 14: In a shocking incident in the Kulatuli area of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, police have arrested five individuals in connection with the brutal murder of a man from Kerala. Two minors have also been taken into custody.
According to police reports, the victim was allegedly mistaken for a thief and was tied up and beaten to death. The incident occurred on June 9, but details only emerged on Saturday through social media.
An FIR was filed on Saturday, leading to the initial detention of eight individuals. By late Saturday night, five were formally arrested, while two minors were held, and one person was released. All detainees will be presented in court later.
Local sources indicate that the Kerala man had come to Kulatuli for work and was visiting a friend’s house in the Sankijahan area. On the morning of June 9, he ventured into a local market but inadvertently wandered into a different neighborhood due to unfamiliarity with the area. Reports suggest he did not speak Bengali.
When villagers spotted the unfamiliar man, they questioned him, demanding to see identification. This escalated the situation, and some suspected him of being a thief. Consequently, he was bound with ropes and severely beaten.
Upon receiving reports of a seriously injured man lying on the street, police from the Kulatuli station arrived at the scene. He was transported to the Jaynagar-Kulatuli rural hospital, where he was pronounced dead by doctors. The body has since been sent for post-mortem examination, and the cause of death remains unclear at this time.
Following the incident, police discovered a video circulating on social media showing the victim being tied up and beaten. Upon confirming that the deceased was indeed the man mistaken for a thief, the Kulatuli police registered the FIR and made arrests.
Authorities are investigating all aspects of the case, and the identity of the deceased has not yet been made public.
